Waiting for God(ot)

Courtesy of FSTDT and the Internet Archive Wayback Machine comes 2007rapture.com, by Shelby Corbitt.

Back on Aug. 29, 2004, his site said:

The rapture of the church (God’s children) willl happen JULY 2007.

By Nov. 30, 2004, he had added the only copyright notice he’d need:

2004-2007 2007Rapture.com. All Rights Reserved.

By Dec. 6, 2005, however, the Word of God™ had become fuzzier:

The rapture of the church (God’s children) will happen during the SUMMER OF 2007. This could be anytime from June 21-September 21.

(emphasis in the original)

As of Jun. 29, 2007, he had a huge header reading:

THE RAPTURE OF THE CHURCH IS GOING TO HAPPEN DURING THE SUMMER, THIS YEAR
(JUNE 21-SEPTEMBER 21) 2007!!

To his credit, the site now says:

I SAID :
THE RAPTURE OF THE CHURCH IS GOING TO HAPPEN, THIS YEAR
2007!!
I WAS WRONG!!!
I THOUGHT THIS WAS A WARNING FROM GOD TO THE WORLD

Meanwhile, Yisrayl Hawkins (formerly Buffalo Bill Hawkins) doesn’t seem to have noticed that the world didn’t end on or about Oct. 13, 2007. Oh, well.

  1. I STILL BELIEVE I RECEIVED A PROPHETIC DREAM FROM GOD ABOUT THE RAPTURE OF THE CHURCH IN 1986.

God’s prophets seem to have comprehension problems. Or perhaps the Almighty mumbles?

This reminds me of one of the sequels to Harold Camping’s prediction that Jesus would return in September 1994. Shortly after the failure of that, I ran across a website explaining some trivial error made by Camping, and re-forecasting the date a few months out. When that date passed, he “found” another error, and re-forecast. And again, about two or three more times (gee, sounds like new product development ;-). And each time, he left up the previous pages, and just added a new one with the revised date. Like, what a great way to proclaim: “I can’t get this right, and I’m too stupid to learn better!” A few weeks after the last failure (Pentecost, 1995 IIRC), the site disappeared. I guess he finally figured out the whole thing was stupid.

  2. Or, as the late great Jay Ward might’ve put it:

    — Hey, Rocky! Watch me pull a doomsday prophecy out of my hat!
    —That trick never works!
    —This time for sure!

  3. Why do people continue making doomsday prophecies? There’s a rich history of them — thousands going back over the course of millennia — and every single one of them has been wrong. The people saying these things must be imbalanced/irrational.

I suppose there is a trade-off at work between increased fame while the prophecy is still in play followed by the inevitable loss of credibility as the target date comes and goes with no apocalypse.

Poll results of the USA are scary as hell though: some 25% of Americans believe Jesus will return to Earth within the next year (or something like that). No wonder these doomsday prophecies get traction. A significant proportion of the USA thinks the world is going to end very soon; hell, why bother with solving global warming or anything when it’ll all end far before that?

I’m constantly amazed by the ability of generation after generation to delude themselves into thinking the end is right around the corner, even though there is nothing fundamentally different in our present situation compared to the past and every prior generation was wrong.

  4. Read this and may the HOLY SPIRIT show you THE TRUTH.

(KJV) Mar13:32 But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.

At this time, no man (John), not the ANGELS, neither THE SON JESUS-CHRIST, but GOD THE FATHER knew.

(KJV)Rev 1:1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John: 1:2 Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw.

And now, GOD THE FATHER, reveal it to is SON JESUS-CHRIST, and THE LORD to his ANGEL and the ANGEL, to John (a man), and this man record all things that he saw and WE ALL READ IT IN THE BOOK OF THE REVELATION.

ALLELUIA !!! IN HEAVEN, THE LORD JESUS CALL THAT A TRUE REVELATION !

So we will know… and the time is already set, and now WE KNOW !

    God bless
