Box Office Numbers
Since some cdesign proponentsists were getting all excited about the
release of
Expelled
on DVD, I looked it up at Box Office Mojo and found:
Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed:
released Apr. 18, 2008, total lifetime domestic gross: $7,720,487.
Religulous:
released Oct. 1, 2008, total lifetime domestic gross: $10,599,000
(estimate).
I also noticed that
The Golden Compass
made $302 million (81% of it foreign), and thought that might be a
respectable enough profit that the other two books might also become
movies. Then again, with a $180 million production budget, maybe not.
By way of comparison,
Spider-Man 2
had a comparable production budget ($200 million), but made $783
million. So I’m not looking forward to seeing The Subtle
Knife on the big screen any time soon.
I can’t help but notice that there are ads for Expelled on TV now. I also can’t help but notice that they don’t discuss what it’s about. All we know is that it stars that hilarious Ben Stein character.
And he won’t seem anywhere near as hilarious after watching this piece of dreck.
Oh, I don’t know. I find him pretty hilarious when he’s spouting off about economics and public policy too. His open letter exchange with Paul Krugman in which he accused Krugman of having a “limited background in economics” was classic. From Krugman’s response:
Since that exchange, the only things that have changed is that Stein has starred in Expelled and Krugman has won the Nobel Prize.
I think Stein is entertaining and enlightening in a “cautionary example” sort of way.
