Hovind Guilty
Well, that didn’t take long:
Jury deliberations took about three hours.
A federal jury has convicted Kent Hovind and his wife, Jo, of tax fraud.
The article doesn’t say whether they were found guilty on all charges, or what the sentence will be.
Also, at some point the PNJ started reporting that the Hovinds owed $845,000 in unpaid taxes, rather than the original $470,000. I don’t know what the deal is with that.
Update, 13:19: astute commenter DodgerDean provided a link to the booking photo, which I’ve added here.
Guilty on all charges, as was wife Jo.
Heres a link to his booking photo:

Cool. Thanks!
umm when did he get sent to jail
A little over a year ago, I believe.
thanks so he should of gone to jail for tax fraud not cuz of his religion
umm kent hovind went to jial wow thats not gunna look good for his reputation!
vic888,
Yes. Which he did. Which is a detail numerous Hovind supporters, many of whom do drive-by postings to this site, appear to have problems coming to grips with.
I still do not believe he couldnt pay taxes.
He had no need to waste 400000 Dollars
He was framed. It is because of what he says. Not because of taxes. Taxes are illegal.

Larry, a year and a half to come up with something insightful and the best you can do is repeat the same tired, discounted arguments the rest of the Hovind sheep have? Or did it take you that long to read the talking points memo?
Perhaps you’ll come back and answer a question that’s been bugging me for quite a while – why is it that the overwhelming majority of Hovind supporters are such undereducated mouth-breathers? This site is been chock full of them in the past and not clutch of them has a combined IQ that exceeds a mid-double digit measurement. A damning condemnation of Fundie homeschooling.
I didn’t hear about this for months after it had happened. Just because someone believes in the Bible doesn’t mean they are undereducated.
Many people who are “educated” believe Bush is doing a fine job. What does that make them? Intelligent? Just because they have a degree or believe in evolution?
Taxes are illegal. Watch the videos. There are videos that show former IRS agents who say they haven’t filed their tax returns in years. Why aren’t they investigated and sent to prison? Hovind was sent to prison because of what he says. Bottomline….
Homeschoolers are far more educated than those who attend public schools. It’s been proven.
Also, my IQ is much higher than most Americans. Maybe….because I don’t sit in front of the television all day or drink alcohol and so on.
I can read, unlike most Americans who are functionally illiterate. And….that statistic is on the rise.
There’s no reason for Hovind to be in prison. It’s time to let him out with a public apology.
What a train wreck. Let’s try cutting some storm control channels into this stream of consciousness…
19 months is plenty of time to do even the most cursory of reading of the trial transcripts, media coverage, US Code…all of which have been rather exhaustively linked to on this very site so it’s not as if the task before you was that onerous.
Demonstrate this mighty intellect you claim posession of – how do the alleged claims of an alleged “IRS agent” prove taxes are illegal?
I’ll allow you this; Hovid said he wasn’t going to pay taxes, he didn’t pay taxes, and he’s in prison.
Yes, Hovid should pay his taxes, pay the penalities, repay the government for the taxpayer money spend prosecuting his dumb ass, and apologize for both the time and effort expended prosecuting him.
Point to where this was said.
Bush? Evolution? Degree? Point to where I brought up any of these subjects.
Proven where? Show your work. Be certain you limit your laser-like observational skills to the performance of your exclusively-fundie educated peers. Including those who are the product of a more secular environment proves you don’t have the chops to stand on your own.
You must be proud. Think about this cupcake, how is it some random individual on some random weblog was able to identify you as a product of fundie homeschooling with only 17 short words out of your keyboard?
I agree with Fez. I have never heard of Hovind until just about 10 minutes ago and I hated his insanity the instant I heard it. He has the right to believe in creationism but calling Evolution a belief is pure insanity. Also, if he doesn’t pay his taxes he should go to jail. Taxes are not illegal because it pays for a good education and much more. I am an intelligent literate person and I am absolutely disgusted with Bush’s leadership on this country. Bush is the reason most of the middle east hates us and because of that I’m relocating to Canada at my first oppurtunity. Most education in school, I believe the only reason we have to go is Math and teaching Literacy. The rest is more interest. I get the majority of my knowledge through hard research. Larry, if you believe taxes are illegal, follow in Hovind’s footsteps and don’t pay your taxes. If you aren’t publicly known for these kind of teachings, and you believe they put him away for his teachings, then you shouldn’t be put in jail.
Oh and if you get put in jail for not paying your taxes, at least you’ll get to meet Hovind for yourself. It’s kinda like a win/win situation if you love Hovind that much.
Now there’s a refreshing voice of nigh-rationality.
.
hey guys-are you still talking about Dr. Kent. You know that he learned something from Marth Stewart right.
hey ben
“but calling Evolution a belief is pure insanity”
go ahead and reproduce macro-evolution and then your statement will hold some weight-remember that “science” must be testable, provable, and reproduced
and
“Bush is the reason most of the middle east hates us and because of that I’m relocating to Canada at my first oppurtunity.”
wow you are so knowledgeable about the history of the middle east, I am sooo impressed. And you obviously see how much better Canada is than the United States so good luck with all that.
Back to the truth-I’ve read that DNA is about 10000000 times more complex than the most sophisticated computer that we have today. Now I have not read the actual calculations involved but the fact remains that we are very complicated. Doesn’t this point towards design. Darwin said himself that with scientific advancements we should find that the underpinnings of existence were unsophisticated blobs-or something like that. Why is it so hard to admit that God created instead of matter created. Where did the matter come from? The nature of existance tells us that there had to be a beginning. Something that transends time, space, and matter must have acted. And I was not homeschooled, but that would have been nice because I could’ve slept in more. Oh yes and I promise to be nice with my sarcasm in the future.

wow that’s kind of harsh
are you seeking intelligent debate or insults? I’ll admit I’m probably better at insults but I try harder at the other.
you know there have been many brilliant minds that had little or no formal education. one such was good ol’ Abe deemed by many to be the “Greatest American.” The point is that we can all be just as smart as the other if we seek truth, however we have all had many other people during our lives try to get us to believe what they wanted us to. We need to always seek truth. The truth. Let’s be smart enough to be able to throw our prejudices aside.
Big B:
First, define exactly what you mean by “macro-evolution”, and what would qualify as meeting your challenge. Oh, and show that what you demand is actually the sort of thing we should expect to see if evolutionary theory is true. References to evolutionary biologists, please; creationist apologists don’t count.
Sorry if this sounds dickish, but creationists have a long and sordid history of a) shifting goalposts, and b) being abysmally ignorant of what evolutionary theory predicts.
Not really, no: good engineers tend to simplify, and reuse existing designs. They try not to reinvent the wheel, something we see all over the place in biology
First of all, are you aware how retarded this sounds? You don’t even know what you’re sorta-quoting Darwin as saying. Find the actual text and post a reference, and then we’ll talk.
Secondly, who gives a rat’s ass what Darwin said? You are aware that he lived 150 years ago, and that biology has advanced an awful lot since then, right?
Because there’s no evidence for any gods. Duh.
Why?
And “that’s the only thing I can imagine” doesn’t count. The universe is not limited by your imagination.
Feel free to begin whenever you feel like it. May I suggest starting by learning what evolution is all about?
I have read throught the legal documents that Dr. Hovind was found guilty of. 1st It was not that he did not pay “his” taxes. It was that he did not withhold taxes for the 30 some employee’s that his ministry had hired. This is to say that he had hired each person as a independant contractor. Which made each person liable for not only there own taxes but also there own benefits. (insurance/retirement) So whether or not taxes are illeagle or not is a who cares statement. When it comes to this case. If Dr.Hovind was guilty of Tax fraud and is prosacutable then that should mean that all idependant contracting is illegal and should also be prosacuted. Meaning that every single news paper in america should be prosacuted as well for the same thing. They are not withholding taxes either.
He was guiltyof not with holding taxes for the employee. If that is truely illegal then the IRS needs to go after the entire rest of the companies that do not with hold taxes for employee’s as well.
After doing much research into this I have found that moe than likely he was prosacuted to stop him from sharing with so many people how tax laws are wrong by consittuional standards. He also showed people how to use the system against it self. Such as getting the US government to pay for tickets. Yes that can be done however when you start messing with the governements money its like kicking over a hornets nest. And what happends when you kick over a hornets nest. You get stung!
KNOW the facts before you going shouting!
I may not have spelled everything correctly here because I am in a hury. But I do know the facts of the case.
Oh ghods: the amateur lawyers are almost as silly as the grunting evangelists.
Actually, I know someone who decided to suck up the hornets coming out of a nest with a vacuum cleaner (I don’t know whether it was a domestic model or a shop-vac). Allegedly he was doing pretty well until he got impatient and started vacuuming them up three and four at a time, at which point they stung him.
I don’t really no you guys, I just seen a picture of hovid and wanted to read it, and I agree with Fiz and I am a beliver in jesus I’m not religeous but I have Jesus in my heart and I pray that hovid and his wife will have Jesus’s presence there so they can stay encoraged and stay in the joy and peace of the lord Jesus Christ. I think its true all what he says even the Dinosaur one because I no I saw one myself in Lake Erie ,I live in Ontario London and I also believe that evolution is dangerous well you propbly wont see this but I just like righting what I think bye
Sara Says:
That was probably Rick Santorum wandering over from Pennsylvania. He’s not particularly large but he’s most certainly out-of-date and obsolete.
Evolution could be “dangerous” in the same way that continental drift is dangerous – it’s not the process that’s dangerous but some of the products of the process can be exceedingly hazardous (earthquakes, volcanoes, venomous spiders, Protestants…)
Since the regular participants here control the entire Internetz we do, in fact, see everything.
Fez,
stay off the crack
Bubba,
Doing your Kent Hovind impression for “Show and Tell” are you?
I hate to be a dick, but Jesus Christ how hard is it to correct your own spelling when this forum has a SPELL CHECKER??? If you aren’t old enough to know the difference between “no” and “know” you probably shouldn’t be on the internet in the first place or old enough to read such disgusting indoctrinations. If you are old enough you don’t seem to have the mental capacity to comprehend spelling much less how evolution and the origins of the universe work
I don’t mean this as a flame, but when xians come here and say the equivalent of “your stupid”, you don’t score any points for the intelligence of those believing in creationism.
Let me guess, you read this in some creationist book about creation to use it to say “and because DNA is so complex, there is no way it would arise by chance.”
First, DNA is quite simple, it’s a chain of 4 base pairs that is held together in a double helix, by sugars and phosphate groups (with ester bonds). Doesn’t sound very complex to me at all. The amount of DNA in your body is staggering, but certainly larges amount of things don’t make them complex.
Secondly, I imagine you and the author of that book don’t know how a computer works and how simple a computer really is. I can imagine this thought going through someone’s head “ZOMG computers are extremely complex, so if DNA is that much more complex it must be super duper extremely uber complex!” It’s a good try though, but DNA works because it is simplistic not because it is complex. The RNA that it creates through transcription are where the real complexity starts to begin.
Really, Google DNA and read the Wiki on it. If you don’t understand what it says, endeavor to find out and learn, but whatever you do don’t just take someone’s word for it. And definitely don’t base your entire belief system around what someone else has a vested interest in lying to you about.
Read this then keep arguing amongst yourselfs. And if evolution is true then explain the ” Anthropic Principle” ….? Please I’d love to hear your replies.
J Money Says:
I don’t know that I feel a need to explain it. The probability of our existence is P=1 and is trivially proven. Why would you feel otherwise?
Here you go:

There, I’ve saved you a Google search.
Just because someone does not want to pay taxes does not make them undereducated. Alot of people think that taxes are illegal. None the less… as scripture puts it, today people are ignorant on purpose. One day everyone will see and know the truth. Every Knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord. So stop your bickering today. Decide today which side you will be on. And then you will see the TRUTH in the end . I pray that you will read the scripture for yourself, and open your heart to let the TRUTH set you free… Before it is too late.

Will they now. Is this the manifestation of your jealous god imposing his will onto others? When your god returns that gift of free will is going to be forcibly removed? There’s another definition of that kind of behavior – it’s called slavery.
I am on the side of truth in this world we live in and making it a better place since, for the foreseeable future, it’s the only one we have. I see no value in tearing this world apart in order to appease the delusional beliefs of those who have an invisible friend telling them to destroy today so there will be a magical fairy land of fluffy clouds and puppies and unicorns and Pat Boone music 24×7 waiting them after they’re dead.
p:
As a matter of fact, I’m currently in the middle of reading the Bible and taking notes for Bible study. But I started a while back, so your prayer had nothing to do with it.
Yeah it’s called CHRISTIANITY, that remains ignorant of the massive amount of evidence in favor of evolution. That remains ignorant of all the contradictions that your religion is built upon. It’s really sad to call someone else ignorant when you yourself must remain ignorant of all the facts to keep believing what you believe in.
That’s true, but when he make claims that Sonar is part of the EM Spectrum, that a comet colliding with the earth is going to rain snow down on the poles (instead of making a massive explosion), no understanding of what light is, and many other ignorant statements he has made (see http://www.Kent-hovind.com for a complete list) that makes him undereducated. He constantly lies that he has a degree in Education. He has a degree in Christian Eduction. If he is such a strong Christian, he should proudly state his full degree instead of hiding it.
Not paying his taxes doesn’t mean he’s undereducated, it just means he’s a liar and a thief. It also means he doesn’t pay much attention to his bible.
The Bible says that the truth (as spelled out in the scripture) will confound the wise (intelligent/educated). Yes, for those that have a brilliant mind, they have a hard time believing in anything that does not come with a blueprint. Basically it is because they understand so much of how things do work or what makes things tick, therefore they intellectualize that a Designer that cannot be seen or explained must not be true. They think that someone who exercises mental discipline to continue their journey of faith must be delusional, when in fact faith is not an easy venture. Because we tend to doubt things that do not have a scientific explanation, does not mean that they didn’t happen or are not true. We that believe must make a choice to believe. We establish the basis for our philosophy and determine that we will not be so narrowminded as to think that because our finite intelligence cannot peicemeal together how an omnipotent being could unfold such an amazing self-contained planet does not make it false. We battle against our own logic that will continually plague us. So I say, even intelligent people with high IQ’s can believe in an invisible God, believe in creationism/intelligent design, believe in the Bible, believe in streets of gold on the other side of mortality.
I would like to say, taking personal jabs at others and name calling of those who believe differently than you is not going to prove anything but the existence of asocialism, a Biblical prophecy indicating a nearing of the end of time.
The tax issue of Dr. Hovind is a matter of interpretion, he interprets his freedom from taxes/control; and the government interprets his responsibility for them because he failed to file a document declaring his status. Non-profit organizations are not supposed to be controlled by the government, that is a constitutionally-declared freedom of religion. Taxes are most definitely a form of control. Having to file paperwork declaring your non-profit status, amount of contributions, purpose of contributions, how the money is spent or deposited, etc. is also a form of control, and religious organizations are supposed to be exempt from this type of control. The so-called ministers who submitted to their calling to be a part of the organization committed to be responsible for their own taxes. As Christian ministers, their provisions were expected from the most high God, yet the organzation made love offerings based on each minister’s personal sacrifice to the furtherance of the truth through the organization. It appears some of them did not like the tax bill when it came time to pay. This situation likely opened an opportunity for the IRS to unconstitutionally control the organization due to unpaid taxes of the individuals. Sad situation!
I believe evolution Is a religion/belief system that aligns with athiesm, as it is in direct conflict with the holy scriptures, and therefore is anti-belief in the foundational cornerstone of Christianity.
Evolution is based on theories that people want to believe in. Because the Darwin’s theory seems probably to someone who seeks an explanation, it still does not make it the truth. It merely makes it believable. There are flaws in the procedures used to declare artifacts as scientific evidence, such as carbon dating, which only proves one thing, the carbon content. Age is only one of the processes that can cause carbon to decompose. Without the knowledge of all of the unknown factors of our universe one cannot declare they found the truth, they have only discovered one logical theory. There are many events that are unknown to man (i.e. variations of radiation levels throughout the inception of earth, cataclysmic events, or other elements, processes, or events that have yet to be discovered or no longer exist). These unknown factors could provide alternative explanations to the evolution process.
Yes, we no doubt have micro-evolution processes unfolding every day through cross breeding of species and development of mutants, but that is no proof that a microorganism firstly, survived the theorized Big Bang event, and secondly went on to reproduced cells different than itself, incestuously reproduced other mutants, etc., bringing the full scope of species we have living on this celestial planet.
Adaptation does not change dna, it is merely a superficial change to allow itself to survive the variables in the environment. A cell divided that creates two individuals produces idential twins with the same dna, however through adaptation they evolve into individuals, yet they still carry the same dna that is passed to their offspring.
I believe evolution is flawed. I believe God created everything and that there is nothing that was not created by Him. I believe in the biological Son of God, Jesus Christ, who died to pay the penalty for sin on my behalf. I believe Dr. Kent Hovind, Christian extrordinairre, is a martyr. He suffers persecution for zealously living his faith, and his willingness to standing by it when put to the test. His imprisonment does not defile his testimony in my eyes, it is a testament of his faith. We could all take lessons from him, as I believe one day we also will be tested for our faith.

My life was a total mess until the day I got to know of Jesus Christ, He truly saved me from self destruction.
Looking back on the last 8 years I still stand in amazement on how He restored my life.
If Kent Hovind is guilty, he is guilty of telling the truth and living by what he preaches.
Go and study this for yourself, throughout history most men and woman spreading the truth about God were severely prosecuted.
Jesus Christ was crucified for preaching the truth, if Jesus was alive on earth today He most probably would have had 10 million anti “Jesus Christ” websites.
Clint:
You’ve got a point there. Hovind has a long history of spewing anti-government, conspiracy-theory nonsense. It’s quite possible that he really believed he didn’t have to pay taxes.
Clint said:
You’re probably correct. It will take a lot more than 10 million anti-Jesus websites to undo the damage Christianism has done to The Christ’s name over the last couple of thousand years but a strong disassociation campaign would be a logical first step.
OMG Joyce, where did you come from?
Yes evolution is a theory, no a theory is not a guess. A theory is a hypothesis that has been proven correct time and time again by the facts.
I suppose you meant probable? If so, consider this statement. It’s probable that the little boy that had a cookie in his hand broke the cookie jar, but it doesn’t make it true does it? Well if you are an evolutionist you would gather facts that would prove or disprove his innocence. You could find out if anyone else could have done it, you could take fingerprints on the jar, you could find eyewitnesses, etc, etc… If the hypothesis is supported by facts (which it is), then it’s not only probable, but likely that it is a fact. You could also turn your statement on xianity (which has far less proof for itself), just because someone finds it probable that a god created the earth in six days doesn’t mean it’s true.
Because we all know that people will think the unbelievable is true.
First Carbon dating is used in mostly Archaeology and not any older sciences like Paleontology, and Archaeology is not used in evolutionary theory. Second, carbon dating is based on the ratios of carbon-12 to carbon-14, not how much carbon is in something.
Again you demonstrate your ignorance of science. Carbon does not decompose (nor do any elements) as decomposition is a completely different process. Carbon-14 can radioactively decay into Carbon-12 (which is more stable btw). At any rate it’s a moot point, Carbon dating is not useful as a long term guide. If you want to brush up on radiometric dating and come back that’s another story entirely.
Every once in awhile someone comes along that says something so ill conceived that you just have to say “WTF are you thinking???”. Really your whole argument makes me think that with EVERY SINGLE sentence. It’s like you are brainwashed to the point of saying anything to make xianity look better than it really is. All the while making arguments that are both illogical and absurd against evolution and atheism. You have a completely distorted view about what the evolutionary theory is and really what are governed laws are about and what they are intended to do. I have a feeling though that you will just say something similar to “I don’t care what you say, I know what is true and you are just gonna burn in hell”.
